FAIRPOINT MEMBERS JOIN LOCAL 1181 October 3, 2008

Nine new Fairpoint members joined IBEW Local 1181 at out October meeting!  Three of them made the trip from Gretna to Charlottesville to take the oath in person. Larry retired as a Construction Foreman with forty years of membership

Our late Brother Wilton Spencer received his 55-year IBEW membership award.  Wilton passed away November 25, 2008.

99 Year-old Elizabeth "Liz" Payne Thacker is a 65-year IBEW member from Charlottesville, VA!  Shown here on June 27, 2008 with her award including a sixty-five year diamond pin.  Liz was born May 19, 1909 and began work as an operator in 1927.  She remembers manager Charlie Ward giving her a hard time for getting signatures from the operators who would form an IBEW local.  She retired in 1974.  Liz still gets around well, but has been blind for the last year.  We wish her the best as she approaches her 100th birthday!  Her caretaker, Bob Thoms (first cousin of the late1181 officer and retiree Jack Thoms) said there is another Charlottesville operator, Norma Lupton, still living who is 104 years old.
